Your Mood, Depression, and the Sun

“Here comes the sun (doo doo doo doo)
Here comes the sun, and I say
It’s all right”

The Beatles were right!  So says a recent study by three BYU professors.

Sun helps decrease depressionMore specifically, the study indicates that exposure to sunlight is a strong contributor to a positive mood — regardless of the weather otherwise.

Clinical researchers have long known that sunlight exposure is helpful for our state of mind.  In fact, Seasonal Affective Disorder, a form of depression especially coinciding with the winter months, is often treated with ultraviolent light exposure in the form of a “lightbox.”   But during those winter months, many of us would prefer to stay warm and cozy inside with a book — or watching NFL, or listening to Christmas music.

Maybe not the best way to go, according to this recent study.

When combined with the other known benefits of exercise, how much merrier would we be during the holidays if we spent 15 to 20 minutes outside daily?

It seems God has provided some really great, natural anti-depressants in this world of ours!

“Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been here
Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun, and I say
It’s all right”
